Section 144 imposed in Bengaluru

News

Karnataka state government has imposed imposed section 144 of crpc (prohibition of assembly of more than 10 people in an area) on Tuesday.

This comes after more than 10000 garment factory workers took to the streets in Bengaluru for the second day in a row on Tuesday, protesting against recent amendments made to the Employees provident funds and Miscellaneous act 1952.

As per the new amendments, employees will be able to withdraw only their contribution to their provident funds account only after attaining age of 58 years.
The main contention of the workers is that, many workers of unorganized sector are not sure of being employed till they are 58 years old.

Jayaram K.R from the garment and textile workers union termed the amendment as an ”anti-workers” move.

Meeting with all central unions has been fixed on 26th of April to discuss regarding the next course of action.
The workers union has also decided to collect atleast 1 lakh signatures against the amendment by May 5th following which a memorandum against the amendment will be submitted to Prime minister Narendra modi.

It has been estimated that the Bengaluru Metropolitan Corporation (BMTC) has incurred the loss of 4 crore due to the cancellation of trips and damage caused to the buses in the course of protest for the past 2 days.
