Suicide Attempt in Tihar jail by Vijay Sharma gage-rape convict in Nirbhaya Case
NEW DELHI: Vijay Sharma, one of the Gang Rape and Murder convict in Nirbhaya Delhi Case 2012, who was sentenced to death, tried to put an end to his life by hanging himself on Wednesday night in Tihar Jail. Soon he was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital at around 12 am where he was said to be a critical condition.
According to Jail Sources, who informed PTI, that, Vijay Sharma had also consumed a heavy dose of anti-depressants before trying to commit suicide, they added by saying, that, he was prescribed with the medication for depression.
In the year 2013, Sharma had demanded extra security in jail, claiming that he was beaten up and assaulted by other inmates and police officials in the jail.
AP Singh, Sharma’s lawyer, to IANS said, “Few days ago, I met him in jail where he complained about torture inside the jail premises.”
Sharma is not the only one attempting suicide associated with the Nirbhaya gang-rape case. In 2013, Ram Singh, then a prime accused in the Nirbhaya gang-rape, hung himself while lodged in Tihar jail.
Ram Singh was the driver of the bus in which Nirbhaya, a paramedic student, was raped and tortured by six men including a juvenile were found guilty of the rape and murder of the 23-year-old woman in a moving bus in Delhi. The death sentence to four of the six rapists including Vinay Sharma has been stayed by Supreme Court following an appeal challenging the high court order upholding the same. Of the six rapists, while one committed suicide, another convict, a juvenile at the time of the crime, was recently released after spending three years at a correctional home.
