FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority License) is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. FSSAI is governed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The headquarters of FSSAI is in New Delhi. The FSSAI license is a unique 14-digit number given to companies and restaurants which proves that the company or restaurants have passed the basic standards for getting license.

The number provided by FSSAI is to be printed in all the packed food material as well the restaurants so that one can be satisfied with the food they are eating or can be satisfied with place they are dinning at.  FSSAI or food license is the must license that every restaurant should have with them if the restaurant is operating in India.

 Food license is obtained from FSSAI (Food Safety and Standard Authority of India). There are certain documentation that needs to fulfilled by every food chain so that no problem arise in future, the list of documents required while applying for the license are as follow:

•             ID Proof and Address Proof

•             Valid E-mail ID and Phone Number

•             NOC (No Objection Certificate) from the owner / Partners

•             Affidavit

•             Kitchen layout plan

•             List of Food Category

•             Medical Certificate of all employees

•             Declaration of Food Safety Management plan

•             Water Testing Report from ISI approved Facility

•             Proof of possession of premise

•             Types of equipment to be used

IMPORTANCE OF FSSAI LICENSING

The FSSAI license guarantees that the individual is dinning at sophisticated and standard place without compromising any hygiene related issue . Apart from hygiene, customers love to go the places where the finds the FSSAI logos as it makes them sure about safety and standard of the food. FSSAI license also saves from the any legal issues, any restaurant without FSSAI license is to be shut.

FSSAI also makes a company / restaurant more reliable, which the food which is being served is safe for consumption. Somewhere it adds up the value / brand for the brand or a company.

Goodwill of the company / restaurant will be maintained with the FSSAI mark / logo.

TYPES OF FSSAI LICNESES

There are 3 types of license provided by FSSAI to the restaurants, companies, and manufacturers. The license is given on the basis of turnover of the company or the restaurant. The three types of License are as follow: –

•             FSSAI BASIC LICENSE – If your company / restaurant has annual turnover less than 12 lakhs then the food business operator shall get registered with Registration Form A.

•             FSSAI STATE LICENSE –   If your company / restaurant has annual turnover in between 12 lakhs to 20 crores then the food business operator shall get registered with State License Form B.

•             FSSAI CENTRAL LICENSE – If your company / restaurant has annual turnover above 20 crores then the food business operator shall get registered with Central License Form B.

The above mentioned are the categories of license one should be applying according to his / her annual turnover of a company or the restaurant.

 PENALTIES RELATING TO FSSAI LICENSING

•             Not having a FSSAI License – If your company does not have a FSSAI License then that will be punishable under the rule of law then the owner may face Imprisonment and FSSAI license penalty up to 5 lakhs for the same.

•             SUB-STANDARD QUALITY OF FOOD IS SERVER – For selling the sub – standard quality of food the restaurant owner or the company owner will be liable to pay the sum of up to 5 lakhs,

•             SELLING MIS – BRANDED GOODS – If the company or restaurant is found selling misbranded goods himself or by someone who’s working on his behalf, held liable for the penalty up to 3 lakhs.

•             UNHYGIENIC FOOD / LOW QUALITY FOOD – If any company or restaurant prepare food or get it prepared by someone which meant for human consumption under unhygienic, unsanitary, and unsafe condition will be held liable to pay the sum of 1 lakh. The amount of compensation varies with the condition If a consumer dies due to consuming that food then the compensation may go up to 5 lakhs.
