SC WILL LAY GUIDELINES FOR UTILIZATION OF NIRBHAYA FUND
Supreme Court today while dealing with a writ petition expressed its disappointment over lack of mechanism for utilization of Nirbhaya fund. The court decided to issue guidelines for utilization of money allotted under the scheme. The bench comprising of Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Deepak Gupta said
“It appears to us that there is no integrated system with regard to disbursal, management and payment of compensation for victims of sexual assault”. The bench observed that centre is paying funds in hand of state but then also the victims were not getting out of these funds.
Amicus Curie Senior Adv. Indira Jaising and Centre was ordered by the bench to make their submission on “how best to evolve an integrated and cohesive system of payment of compensation to victims of sexual assault and also steps to rehabilitate these victims or at least reduce or eliminate the trauma they have undergone”
The bench also directed Member Secretary, National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to remain present in the court on next date of hearing i.e. October 4.
