Suresh Chandra was appointed as Union Law Secretary
Senior legal service officer Suresh Chandra was appointed as Union Law Secretary on Tuesday, 14 June. He was appointed by the recommendation of an appointments Committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A panel of top officials headed by Cabinet Secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha interviewed the shortlisted candidates and selected Chandra, who hold a three-decade experience in handling legal issues related to domestic and international law.
The government had issued advertisements for the post, even inviting candidates from outside the Law Ministry. The ministry received 45 applications from across the country, including lawyers, bureaucrats and judges. This was the first time that the government decided to look outside the legal service for a candidate for the top post in the ministry. With this the government ended the age old monopoly of the Indian Legal Service officers to the top post at the ministry.
